βBeing in leadership is one of the toughest jobs out there. As a leader, I never let anyone off easy. I held us all accountable, myself included. I was never afraid of being unpopular. Being a captain was often lonely as hell, and I felt constant pressure to be strong, to not make mistakes. I wish I had realized earlier that vulnerability doesn't undercut your authority as a leader, but enhances it. Making mistakes is unavoidable. But being honest and open about those mistakes makes you a better leader. Acting with empathy first, always, makes you a better leader and a better person.β
